Why virtual sets are back

A physical set costs AED 80,000. A virtual set costs a weekend of design.

Virtual production went from niche to mainstream when real-time game engines (Unreal, Unity) crossed the quality line. A virtual set now renders at broadcast resolution with photoreal lighting, accurate camera parallax, and talent that actually appears to be in the environment. The physical set build it replaces would have cost weeks and tens of thousands.

For CBA clients, virtual sets unlock event formats that were cost-prohibited by physical staging. Custom-branded news studios, product reveal environments, client-branded virtual cityscapes, virtual sponsor lounges for hybrid events. Design the world in software, render it live, key the talent in, broadcast.

2026 note: AI keying has matured (Vizrt AI Keyer and equivalents). Green screen is less mandatory than it was. CBA tests every venue before quoting, because the right answer depends on the lighting, talent wardrobe, and motion profile.

Where it works

Four formats where virtual production pays off.

Branded news-style broadcasts. Corporate "newsroom" broadcasts, internal town halls with a premium editorial feel, investor updates staged in a custom environment. Host stands in a branded virtual studio that would cost 5x to build physically.

Product reveals and launches. Virtual environments that showcase the product in a setting that matches the brand story. Launch the new car in a virtual desert. Launch the new watch in a virtual art gallery. Cheaper than building, faster than filming on location.

Sponsor activations for hybrid events. Virtual sponsor lounges where remote delegates can visit in a branded 3D environment. Sponsors get exposure that online-streaming formats cannot otherwise deliver.

Education and demonstration. Training content, product demos, executive briefings staged in environments that visually reinforce the message. Works particularly well for technical subjects where the virtual environment is the teaching tool.

Under the hood

Specification.

Technical specification

Keying. Real-time chroma keying with broadcast-standard spill suppression, edge detail, and transparency handling. Green or blue screen depending on wardrobe. AI keying available for venues where green screen is not practical.

Set design. Unreal Engine 5 virtual sets, custom-designed per brand. Photoreal lighting matched to talent lighting in the physical studio. Camera tracking integrated so the virtual set pans and zooms with the physical camera.

AR overlays. Real-time graphics and 3D objects rendered into the broadcast feed. Product models rotating in space, data visualisations, animated branded elements. Tracked to camera so they appear anchored in the scene.

Camera tracking. Stype, Mo-Sys, or Ncam camera tracking systems integrated with Unreal Engine. Sub-frame accuracy so talent and virtual elements share the same perspective.

Studio. CBA-operated virtual production studio in Dubai. On-location setup available with sufficient lead time and venue audit (lighting and space requirements are specific).

Delivery. Live to broadcast, or recorded for post-production. Output in 1080p or 4K HDR. Compatible with every streaming and broadcast destination.

FAQ

Questions we get from buyers before they book

Do we need to shoot in your studio or can you come to us?

CBA studio is purpose-built for virtual production (lighting, chroma wall, camera tracking). On-location is possible with sufficient lead time and a venue that can accommodate the lighting and space requirements. Most clients find the studio option faster and cleaner.

How long does it take to design a custom virtual set?

2-4 weeks for a bespoke Unreal Engine set built from scratch. 3-5 days if adapting from an existing template (branded news studio, generic corporate environment). Brand kit, reference imagery, and a design review cycle are required for bespoke builds.

Can talent interact with virtual elements?

Yes. AR objects can be placed in the scene and talent can reach toward them, stand in front of them, or walk around them, depending on the tracking setup. For fast-moving or complex interactions, pre-rehearsal is essential to block the movement.

What about AI keying without green screen?

2026 state of the art (Vizrt AI Keyer, launched NAB 2026) is production-ready for fixed-frame broadcasts with predictable lighting. It still struggles with reflective suits, fast motion, and mixed lighting. CBA will advise case-by-case whether green screen or AI keying fits the event.

Does this integrate with live streaming or is it recording-only?

Both. Virtual production outputs a live feed that streams to any destination, or records to ProRes master for post-production. Live streaming is the more common use case for corporate events.

Your event deserves production that performs.
